Dilophosaurus

Everyone remembers the terrifying Dilophosaurus scenes from Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park created an awesome creature, but the real animal was much more frightening. Dilophosaurus was the T.Rex of it’s time. It would have weighed as much as a large polar bear and would have been almost 20ft long! Recent evidence has shown us that this creature was a strong predator.

I worked from a few skeleton reconstructions, building up forms and muscles as I sculpted it. I referenced Hornbill birds and monitor lizards to help me develop a life-like reconstruction of the animal. On this project I created several custom texture brushes and designed tileable scales in Substance Designer. The final model was textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Blender. It was an uphill battle to figure out how to rig the creature, but with the help of some other 3D artists I finished the rig and can now create just about any pose imaginable.

Created using Zbrush, Blender, Substance Painter, and rendered in Cycles.
